Patients can avoid 111 queues and go online to screen for COVID-19, and seek advice for hundreds of other conditions, with local GPs’ Doctorlink platform

Doctors in Lancashire and South Cumbria are offering online consultations with Doctorlink, the leading online triage provider to the NHS, in a bid to provide immediate and accurate health advice for residents as social distancing measures remain in place.

The platform, which is available to download from the Apple Store and Google Play, can assess more than 95% of possible health conditions – including COVID-19 – and help patients find the right service and appointment for their needs.

The service, part of the NHS’ latest drive to improve patient access to GP appointments, is accessible to more than 12 million patients nationwide, including those in Lancashire and South Cumbria.

First updated to identify coronavirus in January, the latest version of the app also includes new logic to identify and provide advice to patients who are at increased risk of developing complications due to their age or underlying health conditions. The update also supports general practices by prioritising remote phone or video appointments to contain spread of the virus.

The app’s algorithms will be continually updated in line with advice from Public Health England, NHS England and the UK Government, as more information is determined about COVID-19 and its spread.

The Doctorlink platform also has benefits for doctors in the region, bringing potential savings of 15,000 annual clinical hours per general practice each year, while diverting up to 22% of cases to more appropriate forms of care.

Practices using the service are achieving uptake by up to a third of patients and seeing a drop in telephone triage of up to 30%. Results also evidence a 35% reduction in the need for same-day appointments.
